Scholarships

How to apply:

Scholarship applications for the Fall of 2024 and the Academic Year of 2024 are now open application deadline: March 31 2024.
 

CSU IP Ghana Scholarship: Made possible through the generosity of former CSU IP participants. Scholarships are available to students accepted into the CSU IP Ghana program. One (1) $1,000 will be awarded. To qualify for the scholarship, students must meet the following criteria: 

• Must have a strong academic record. 
• Must have a high financial need. 
• Be enrolled in the year-long program (if chosen for the award)

CSU IP Language and Culture Scholarship: Made possible through the generosity of former CSU IP participants. Scholarships are available to students going abroad to learn a language and be admitted to a CSU IP "Language and Culture" program. One (1) $1,500 scholarship per active language and culture program will be awarded to students admitted to the academic year program, and one (1) $750 scholarship to students admitted to the semester program. To qualify for the scholarship, students must meet the following criteria: 

• Must have a strong academic record. 
• Must have a high financial need.

Five (5) $1000 scholarships for the academic year, one (1) $1000 for the calendar year, and three (3) $750 for the semester program will be awarded. To qualify for the scholarship, students must meet the following criteria: 

• Have a strong academic record
• Have a high financial need 

Lyman G. Chaffee Scholarship: Dr. Lyman G. Chaffee was professor emeritus of the California State University, Dominguez Hills specializing in Latin American politics. The Lyman G. Chaffee Scholarship funds a scholarship for low-income students with financial needs studying abroad through the CSU International Program. Dr. Chaffee’s academic interests were heavily influenced by his travels, which included trips to 70 different countries. He ran an overseas study program in Madrid for two years and extensively traveled to South America, Asia, and Africa. Students applying should have a seeded interest in developing an understanding of the world’s increasingly global nature. Two (2) $2,000 scholarships will be awarded. To qualify for the scholarship, students must meet the following criteria: 

• Be currently enrolled in a full-time CSU undergraduate program through CSU International Programs.
• Have a high financial need.
• Be interested in developing a global understanding as expressed through the Scholarship Application.
• Be enrolled in the year-long program (if chosen for the award)

Michelle Marriot Study in France Memorial Scholarship: The Michelle Marriott Study in France Memorial Scholarship is for students participating in the CSU IP Aix-en-Provence in France program. The scholarship was created in memory of Michelle Marriott, an international student in Aix-en-Provence, France, in 1985-1986. Ms. Marriott passed away from cancer in January 2014. One (1) $1,500 scholarship will be awarded. To qualify for the scholarship, students must meet the following criteria: 

• Demonstrate superior academic performance with a minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0 on a 4.0 scale and be in academic good standing (met). 
• Be enrolled at a California State University campus as a full-time equivalent undergraduate or graduate student in any major field. They must have completed at least one term of college-level French. 
• Remain a full-time equivalent student during the scholarship period. 
• Be in the Aix-en-Provence, France academic year program. 
• Be enrolled in the year-long program (if chosen for the award)

Stephen Y. Ho Memorial Scholarship. The Stephen Y. Ho Memorial Scholarship was created by the family of Stephen Y. Ho, an alumnus of California State University, Los Angeles, who passed away in 2021. Mr. Ho received his BBA and MBA degrees from Cal State LA in late 1970. He later attended the Monterey Foreign Language Institute and became one of the few licensed legal interpreters in Chinese translation in the State of California. He was the founder of the company, Stephen Y. Ho Interpreting, serving the Greater Los Angeles area for more than 25 years. The CSU International Programs scholarship honors his legacy as a talented and well-respected community contributor. To qualify for the scholarship, students must meet the following criteria: 

• Enrolled as a full-time student in the CSU IP Taiwan program.

Ward Wallach Memorial International Scholarship: The Ward Wallach Memorial Scholarship honors Mr. Ward Wallace, a 1982-1983 student in the CSU International Programs at Waseda University who was killed in an airplane crash in 1985.  One (1) $500 scholarship will be awarded. To qualify for the scholarship, students must meet the following criteria: 

• Enrolled as a full-time student in the CSU IP Japan at Waseda University. 
• Have a strong academic record. 
• Be currently pursuing a degree in the humanities, arts, and social sciences. 
• Have demonstrated a serious and continuing interest in Japan with minimally showing priory study of the Japanese language. 
• All else being equal, the student with the greatest financial need will be given preference. 
• If it does not offend the recipient's religious sensibilities, it is requested that the recipient make a simple act of commemoration at the Ryoenji Temple following Japanese custom. 
• Be enrolled in the year-long program (if chosen for the award)

Outside Scholarships

Baden-Württemberg Fellowship Program provides limited scholarships for study in Germany through the CSU International Programs. The award is 400 Euros per month and can be awarded for up to 11 months. Qualified students accepted to the IP Germany program will be notified by CSU IP and provided instructions on applying for the Baden-Württemberg Fellowship. 

Boren Scholarships: Boren Scholarships, funded by the National Security Education Program (NSEP) provide unique funding opportunities for U.S. undergraduate and graduate students interested in studying a foreign language appropriate in countries critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad. Undergraduate students can receive up to $20,000, and graduate students up to $30,000 for the academic year.  In exchange for funding, recipients commit to working in the federal government for a minimum of one year. Boren Scholarships will give preference to applicants planning to study in the following CSU IP programs: Chile, China, Ghana, Israel, Japan, Korea, Mexico, South Africa, Taiwan. 

British Universities Transatlantic Exchange Association (BUTEX) Scholarship: Each scholarship is 500 British Pounds and will be paid to the award recipients once they have arrived and registered at their host university in the U.K. 

Fund for Education Abroad (FEA): FEA is committed to increasing the opportunities for dedicated undergraduate American students to participate in high-quality, rigorous education abroad programs by reducing financial restrictions through the provision of grants and scholarships. 

German Academic Exchange Service Scholarships (DAAD): The DAAD offers undergraduate scholarships to highly qualified students to study abroad in Germany. 

The Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship: This scholarship provides awards for U.S. undergraduate students receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study abroad programs worldwide. 

Japan Student Service Organization (JASSO) Scholarship: All Japan IP participants are considered based on specific eligibility requirements. The student must be in good academic standing, have shown a personal interest in developing his or her understanding of the Japanese language and culture, and have a demonstrated need for financial assistance. Japanese citizens are not eligible for this scholarship. Students do not need to apply for the JASSO Scholarship.
